HEALTH AND WELLNESS:

CORE/Floor Exercise Class – PLEASE NOTE: There are now four Core/Floor Exercise classes to choose from at the Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite. Come strengthen your abdominals and back, the CORE of your body. All exercises are done on a provided mat.  .50¢ suggested donation

 

Mondays – 10:15 am – 11:00 a.m. with Lucille

Tuesdays – 1:00 pm - 1:45 pm with Dawn. 

Wednesdays – 10:15 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. with Lucille

Thursdays – 1:00 pm – 1:45 pm with Dawn.

Aquatics Class (Senior Water Exercise class) with Nora Bailey is being held at Laabs pool (750 W. Picacho) ­on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. First come, first serve. .50¢ suggested donation.

Aerobics class resumes at Eastside Center, 310 N. Tornillo with Jennifer Smith on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, 9:00 a.m. 50¢ suggested donation.

Yoga Class at Benavidez Community Center, 1045 McClure. Nora Bailey, certified instructor, will be conducting Hatha yoga classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 8:00 a.m. This class is funded in part under an agreement with the NCNMEDD, Area Agency on Aging.  .50¢ suggested donation

Mesilla Park Exercise 304 W. Bell. Room 3.  Join our certified instructors, Dawn Patterson on Tuesdays & Thursdays at 10:15a.m and Lucille Garcia on Fridays at 10:15 a.m.   .50¢ suggested donation.

Tai Chi with Cher on Mondays from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Eastside Center, 310 N. Tornillo; Tuesdays & Thursdays from 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. at the Munson Senior Center, 975 S. Mesquite and Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m.–10:00 a.m. at East Mesa/Sage Café, 5589 Porter Dr.  .50¢ suggested donation.

(PLEASE NOTE: In order to continue our projects that are funded in part under an agreement with the NCNMEDD, Area Agency on Aging, we are obliged to suggest donations. We are suggesting a $.25 donation for our weekly blood pressure and glucose clinics and a $.50 donation for each of our fitness and yoga classes.)

Cheryl Black, psychologist is facilitating a group therapy for adults who have lost vision. Sessions will be held on the first Tuesday of each month. There will be two sessions to choose from: Mesilla Park from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. or the Munson Senior Center from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Please sign up either in person or by phone with CeCe at the Munson Senior Center at 528-3000.

Stroke Support group, the 1st Thursday of the month, at 1:00 p.m. inside the Dona Ana room at Munson Senior Center.

On Going Activities:

Please check at the Munson Senior Center or call 528-3000 for information on any of our on-going programs, such as, walking group, chess, canasta, pinochle, bridge, beginning line dancing, beginning crochet, zipper art sand painting, the crafters and the Munson quilters.

55 Alive Defensive Driving. You must attend both days to receive your certificate. These classes are on a first-come, first-served basis and at a cost of $10 per person.  Payment is due at the door the day of the first class. No pre-registration required. Mark your calendars for December 11th & 12th, from 1:00-5:00 p.m.  Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall, 1240 S. Espina.

Canasta is every Wednesday from 12:00 pm–4:00 pm at the Munson Senior Center. Experienced players and those who would like to learn are welcome.

Beginning Line Dancing with Sherrill Patterson and Cheryl Lither on Mondays at the Munson Senior Center from 1:45 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Also join Sherrill on Fridays for intermediate line dancing from 1:45 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

English as a Second Language (ESL) with Mary Lou Darby on Thursdays and Fridays from 9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. at the Munson Senior Center in the Conference Room.

Creative Writing at the Munson Senior Center (Dona Ana Room) on Wednesday’s beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Mah Jongg, Thursday’s open play is on going from 10:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

Watercolor Painting Class meets Monday 8:30–11:30 am in the Art/Quilting room at Munson.

Pinochle group meets on Fridays from noon – 5:00pm at Munson.

Bingo Mania, if you are interested in playing bingo, please join us at the Eastside Center on Tuesdays from 12:30 p.m.–1:30 p.m. No money involved. You can donate old and/or new knick-knacks for our prize collection. Join us for fun and to meet new friends or socialize with old ones. China Painters meet every Monday afternoon from 1:00 -4:00pm in the Munson Center art studio.

Horseshoe Pitching Practice if you are interested in pitching horseshoe’s, please come to the park behind Munson Center and join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:00 -3:00pm.

Men’s 8-Ball Pool Tournament at Munson Center the last Wednesday of every month.  Tournament is open to men 50 years of age and older and is free.  Gift cards for 1st and 2nd place winners.  Sign-up is from 8am-9am, tournament starts around 9:15am.  For more information please contact Dan Carrillo at 528-3111.

Ladies Pool Tournament at Munson Center the first Monday of every month.  Tournament is open to ladies 50 years of age and older and is free.  Gift cards for 1st and 2nd place winners.  Tournament starts around 8:30am.

The Library BookClub meets at the Munson Senior Center the third Wednesday of every month from 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m.  Come join the Library Book Club to read great selections and meet new people.

Movie Day is the fourth Thursday of every month at 1:30 p.m. in the Conference Room.  Call Mark for title information at 528-3406 or email mmumper@las-cruces.org .  Free popcorn is served. Come take a break and watch with us.  Movie suggestions are welcome at the Munson Library and at the front desk. Please sign up.

Nintendo Wii We are looking for a volunteer or volunteers to assist us in hosting an on going activity with our Nintendo Wii at Munson Center.  We would like someone, or a small team of folks that might take turns, to set up, operate, and be present during this activity.  Dates and times our open for negotiation.  Volunteers will be registered through RSVP, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.  For questions and discussion, please contact Shaunna Foster at the Recreation office 528-3037, email SFoster@las-cruces.org.

 

Breakfast at Munson! Anyone 60 and older and their spouse, regardless of age, are invited to start their day with a continental breakfast in the Cantina at the Munson Senior Center. Serving hours are from 8:00 to 9:00am. Our daily menu includes fruit juice, cereal, milk, bread or muffin and peanut butter or jelly. On Wednesdays, hard boiled eggs will also be served. A $.50 donation is suggested for the breakfast. On Wednesdays, a donation of $.75 is suggested. We look forward to seeing and serving you! Come join us for a healthy start to your day.

Pot Luck - Enjoy a pot luck dinner at the Munson Senior Center on the first Sunday of every month at 12:45 pm. Bring a covered dish and your own plates, cups and silverware and meet new people. Enjoy Sunday brunch, pot-luck style.

SPECIAL EVENTS:

Thanksgiving Day Meal on Thursday, November 27, 2008- Munson Center will be serving a special meal on Thanksgiving Day.  We will begin serving at 12 noon and all guests will be seated and served at the table.  The suggested donation is $3.00.  Please make a reservation no later than Monday, November 24, 2008.  NOTE: Munson Center is the only center serving this meal; all other centers are closed this day.  DIAL-A-Ride will be closed this day so if you live within the City limits and need transportation, please call 528-3302 to schedule a ride.

Dan Scurlock will be presenting a course on Native Peoples of the Northern Chihuahuan Desert.  Classes will be held from 9:00-10:15a.m., Mondays & Wednesdays:  December 1, 3, 8, and 10 at Munson Center.  Two field trips will be held on Fridays: Dec. 5 (Apache Flats) and 12 (Museum of Natural History, El Paso).  Cost is $12.50 per person.  Class is limited – please sign up at the Recreation Office at Munson Center.

Lawyer Referral For The Elderly of the State Bar of New Mexico will hold a 9:30-10:30 a.m. workshop on Thursday, Dec. 11.  The workshop addresses common legal issues affecting seniors.  At 11:00 a.m., 30-minute appointments are available for free one-on-one legal counseling.  Please bring paperwork or questions you want to discuss.  To schedule an appointment, call 528-3000.

Hiking Trip! Interested in hitting the hills?  Senior Programs Recreation will be conducting hiking trips once a month (weather permitting) leaving from Munson!  Cost will vary and will include transportation to and from destination.  Preparation is Important!  Everyone is expected to bring their own water, snacks, walking shoes, pack etc.  Some destinations are, Dripping Springs, Soledad Canyon, Achenbach Canyon and other Organ Mountain and surrounding areas.  If interested, talk to Shaunna in the Recreation office. Next month’s trip will be on December 5th, Rough and Rugged Mountains.  4 mile round trip.  Varied elevation gain.  Difficult Ability Level.  Cost $2.  Departing Munson at 8:30am.  Must sign up in advance.  Pack a lunch, sunscreen and plenty of water.  Contact Shaunna at 528-3000.

 

RSVP Community Connections:

You are invited to join the Retired/Senior Volunteer Program, by donating a few hours a week to help our community grow.  Make a difference doing fun things that include:

·          Tutors from K-12, help our students to excel in their studies

·          Clerical, help at many types of programs doing office tasks 

·          Join in the fun with NM State Games

·          Be an advocate for those that need someone to speak on their behalf

·          Make items that can be donated to various community programs

·          Serve as a member of an organization, raise funds to help others

·          Have a trade that you can teach others

·          Deliver a hot meal to homebound elderly

·          Feel good about giving a few hours to make our community a healthy and enjoyable place for everyone.  All volunteer activities have flexible times and schedules
