Sustainability Office

Approach

The City of Las Cruces' Sustainability Program draws from a well-established sustainability framework, the Triple Bottom Line (TBL). The TBL is designed to help organizations balance economic vitality, environmental health, and social responsibility now and in the future.

It is a departure from making decisions based solely on the financial bottom-line. It reflects a greater awareness of the impacts of our decisions on the environment, society and the economy - and how those impacts are related. The intersection of economic viability, environmental health, and social responsibility is where sustainability is achieved.

Sustainability Action Plan

Sustainability Action Plan 2014-2017

The City Council adopted the Sustainability Action Plan 2014-2017 on June 16, 2014. The Sustainability Office spearheaded the development of the Plan with valuable input from City staff and community groups. The Sustainability Action Plan 2014-2017 (SAP2) builds on the first plan to create a common vision of and direction for sustainability with staff and residents including metrics to measure progress.

Each year, the Sustainability Office shares the City's sustainability progress in a report to the City Council. The Sustainability Action Plan Annual Update 2015 and Sustainability Action Plan Update 2016 can be found here.

Sustainability Action Plan 2011-2014
The City Council adopted the Sustainability Action Plan 2011-2014. This plan provided a common starting point for City staff, residents and elected officials for ongoing decision-making about sustainability. The Sustainability Action Plan Report and the Sustainability Action Plan Presentation summarize the accomplishments.
Sustainability Matters Newsletters

Every two months the Sustainability Office produces a newsletter updating residents about sustainable efforts within and around the City. The letter is distributed as an attachment in one of the City Manager's Weekly Newsletters. Click here for back issues.

Want to go green?

The Sustainability Action Plan 2014-2017 is organized into 4 themes - energy, water, materials, and the community and describes ways the City is working on becoming more sustainable. We have used these same four themes to organize information to help you go green. Visit energy, water, materials, and the community resources to find out more.
