Crash Results in DWI, Child Abuse Charges 2018

A woman suspected of causing a crash late Monday evening has been charged with DWI and child abuse for driving with three young children in the vehicle.

Marlayna Dorward, 31, of the 4800 block of south Main Street, is charged with a third-degree felony count of child abuse and a misdemeanor count of aggravated driving while intoxicated.

About 10 p.m. Monday, July 30, Las Cruces police were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of south Main Street at Union Avenue. Police learned a white Nissan Versa driven by Dorward was westbound on Union when it collided with a Subaru SUV traveling east on Union. The investigation revealed that Dorward failed to yield before making a left-hand turn.

Dorward’s three children – ages 10, 3 and less than 12 months – were in the vehicle. No major injuries were reported in the crash.

Officers detected a strong odor of alcoholic beverage emitting from Dorward and learned that she consumed whiskey earlier in the evening. Officers conducted a standardized field sobriety test on Dorward and determined she was intoxicated. She was arrested for the DWI and later submitted to a breath test that confirmed her intoxication.

Dorward was booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where she is initially being held without bond.
