Chandler Tank Land Management 2017

Several Departments within the City of Las Cruces are working together quickly to resolve a land management concern that has arisen after removing vegetation and unwanted plants from a large ponding area on the East Mesa known as Chandler Tank (on the west side of Sonoma Ranch Boulevard, north of Highway 70).

Plants, shrubs, weeds and other vegetation were cleared in this area by a private contractor at the City’s direction earlier this week, in part of the “Just Weed It” program. The “Just Weed It” program is an eight-week effort designed to remove overgrown weeds in a partnership between Parks & Recreation, Streets and Traffic Operations and Codes Enforcement.

Upon the land’s clearing residents in the area have expressed concern the removal of weeds and ground cover may cause an erosion problem. The City is looking to apply a resolution in the short term which includes a wind fence, watering, and other maintenance.

The City will also be holding a Public Input Meeting within the next couple of weeks to talk about both intermediate and long term plans for the area. Intermediate plans will include, but are not limited to, landscape plantings adjacent to residences, slope protection, seeding and ongoing watering and erosion control.

Further, the City will look to give residents an opportunity to weigh in on the potential of Chandler Tank, which could include a City Park or gathering space, through the development of a master plan. A news release will be distributed once a location and time have been secured.
