Art Class - Retablo
Learn to paint while exploring the rich history and practice of a truly New Mexican folk art. This unique genre of art, deeply rooted in European history, was brought to Mexico with the arrival of the Spanish and then ultimately adopted by New World mestizo natives to become what is known today at the Mexican folk retablo. It is a hybrid of centuries-old Western iconography and indigenous artistry, reflecting the historical, cultural and religious links between “old” and “new” worlds. It will be our vehicle to learning both traditional and modern oil painting techniques focusing on composition, color, indirect painting and the use of various oil painting mediums. All artistic levels are welcome.
