Application for Fall 2017

Program Information

The City of Las Cruces is pleased to offer the Neighborhood Leadership Academy for residents. Participants will receive first-hand information about City services and programs through comprehensive presentations from City department leaders, and on-site field trips to various public facilities..

The Neighborhood Leadership Academy is free but space is limited to the first 35 participants who enroll. Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of completion at the time of graduation. (Spanish translations and interpretation is available upon request).

The first class begins on September 6, 2017 and will end on December 13, 2017 with graduation.

Only completed applications will be considered. The application period is from August 7 to 25. Deadline to submit the application is August 25, 2017. Applications may be submitted by email to or dropped off in person at City Hall, 700 N. Main St., Suite 3600 - Office of the City Manager.

The mission of the City of Las Cruces Neighborhood Leadership Academy is to provide improved knowledge of City government to residents so they can become effective neighborhood advocates and community leaders.


  • To develop neighborhood and community leaders
  • Provide an understanding and knowledge of City services and processes
  • Promote civic engagement and residents’ roles in decision-making processes
  • Increase residents’ pride in their community and understanding of how City government works for them

Selection Criteria

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a resident living within Las Cruces City Limits
  • Must complete and submit the Neighborhood Academy application form for enrollment

Program Summary

This free program helps residents better understand how their city government operates and how they can work with their city government to preserve and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Through weekly workshops of presentations and scheduled field trips, participants receive first-hand information about government operations, the scope of services and programs offered by the City and the appropriate way to bring about change within their neighborhoods.

The Academy is a once a week evening course program for a total of 15 sessions. Unless otherwise noted in the schedule, all sessions begin at 6:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesdays. Participants are encouraged to attend all session courses to obtain a Certificate of Completion from the City of Las Cruces. Participants who miss more than three classes will not be able to complete the program. Locations for the classes will be available to academy participants by Wednesday, August 30, 2017.
