Materials and Sustainability

diagram of life cycle costsSustainable decisions consider more than just the purchase price. When we factor in the life cycle costs of a product – from extracting raw materials, to production, sales, repair, and disposal -- the environmental, social and economic costs come to light. The materials and energy used and the waste and pollution generated at each step in the life cycle of a product can have serious consequences on people, profit, and the planet.

Buying local, green, and reusable products are important steps and need to become institutionalized in procurement policies, contracts, and daily habits. Innovative techniques that repurpose materials and avoid toxic substances eliminate dangerous bi-products. All the while, monitoring the air, water, soil and health of the plants and animals – including humans – can help us track our progress.
