Application for Spring 2018

Program Information

The City of Las Cruces is pleased to offer the Neighborhood Leadership Academy for residents who reside within city limits. Participants will receive first-hand information about City services and programs through comprehensive presentations from City personnel, and on-site field trips to various public facilities.

The Neighborhood Leadership Academy is free but space is limited to the first 35 participants who enroll. The first class begins on February 7, 2018 and will end on May 23, 2018 with graduation. (Spanish translations and interpretation, or ADA accommodation are available upon request. Requests must be made by January 25, 2018.)

Participants who successfully complete the program will receive a certificate of graduation at the time of graduation.

Only completed applications will be considered. The application period is from January 4 to January 25, 2018. Deadline to submit the application is January 25, 2018. Applications may be submitted by email to jrickman@las-cruces.org or dropped off in person at City Hall, 700 N. Main St., Suite 3600 - Office of the City Manager.

Mission

The mission of the City of Las Cruces Neighborhood Leadership Academy is to provide improved knowledge of City government to residents so they can become effective neighborhood advocates and community leaders.

Objectives

  • To develop neighborhood and community leaders
  • Provide an understanding and knowledge of City services and processes
  • Promote civic engagement and residents’ roles in decision-making processes
  • Increase residents’ pride in their community and understanding of how City government works for them

Selection Criteria

  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be a resident living within Las Cruces City Limits
  • Must complete and submit the Neighborhood Academy application form for enrollment

Program Summary

The classes and presentations provide general information to appeal to the broad interests of all Las Cruces residents. The information is designed to help residents better understand how their city government operates and how they can work with their city government to preserve and improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. Through weekly workshops of presentations and scheduled field trips, participants receive first-hand information about government operations, the scope of services and programs offered by the City, and the appropriate way to bring about change or improvements within their neighborhoods.

The Academy is a 15-session program comprising 13 classes, a recognition by City Council, and a graduation event. Most of the classes are scheduled between 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. unless otherwise noted on the class schedule, which is available to participants. Class members may miss up to three classes and still qualify to receive a certificate of graduation. Graduates of the program automatically become eligible to apply for an advanced level academy to be offered later in 2018..
