[ARCHIVED] Yellow Signs Mark the Spot for Change

Yellow Sign in front of a tree

The City of Las Cruces Community Development Department has created a “Yellow Sign” interactive map that marks where large yellow “Public Hearing Notice” signs are located throughout the city. The yellow signs have the City of Las Cruces logo across the top with a heading that reads “Public Hearing Notice.”

The signs are posted at the location that has a pending public hearing scheduled. A synopsis of the project and the place and time of the hearing is listed on the sign. It is designed to be read up-close, not by passing motorists. Interested individuals can also access the information by going to the map on www.las-cruces.org/1683/Planning-and-Zoning

The City follows a public notification process when planning or zoning proposals are requested. Public notification letters are sent to property owners within a 500-foot radius from the location, advertisements are placed in local newspapers, and the yellow signs are posted near the impacted location 15 days before the public hearing. Hearings are conducted at the Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z) meeting, every fourth Thursday of the month, with limited exception. The P&Z takes final action on specific case types; however, P&Z also serves as a recommending body to the City Council on some requests. An additional notification process occurs prior to City Council hearings.

Some of the more common proposals that require notices include variances, zone changes, street name changes, Special Use Permits (SUPs), Planned Unit Developments (PUDs), appeals, subdivisions, or master plans.

For information or to access the map, go to www.las-cruces.org/1683/Planning-and-Zoning.

The City’s Community Development can be reached at 575/528-3043.
